Sensex down 9 points at 12,030

After opening with a positive gap of 14 points at 12,054 the Sensex zoomed to touch a new all-time intra-day high of 12,102 in early trades.

Profit-taking soon after saw the index take a sharp dip to 11,860 - down 242 points from the peak.

The index bounced back smartly in noon deals, and moved into positive zone before finally closing almost flat (down nine points) at 12,030.

The Nifty closed flat at 3,573.

The index has gained a whopping 7% (793 points) during the week.

The BSE Consumer Durable index rallied 1.6% to 3395. The Auto, FMCG and Healthcare indices ended with marginal gains at 5512, 2264 and 3957, respectively. The BSE IT and Oil & Gas indices declined 1% each to 4184 and 5544, respectively. The PSU index was down 0.7% at 6161.

The market breadth was negative. Out of 2,544 stocks traded, 1,418 declined, 1,065 advanced and 62 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERS

Ranbaxy was firm right through the session, and finished with a gain of 6.6% at Rs 504.

HLL gained 3% at Rs 285. Larsen & Toubro advanced over 2% to Rs 2,706.

Tata Motors and Maruti rallied over 2.5% each to Rs 978 and Rs 904, respectively.

Gujarat Ambuja rallied 2% to Rs 120. Grasim surged nearly 2% to Rs 2,396.

Tata Steel, which tumbled to an intra-day low of Rs 614 in mid-noon deals, shot back sharply and zoomed to a high of Rs 667 towards the end. The stock finally closed with a gain of 1.6% at Rs 655.

Satyam plunged over 7% to Rs 808 on the back of heavy selling pressure due to weak FY07 guidance.  The company board today announced a 38% jump in Q4 bottomline, 1:1 bonus issue and a payout of Rs 5 per share.

NTPC, Reliance and Hindalco dropped over 2% each to Rs 136, Rs 974 and Rs 211, respectively.

SBI declined 1.7% to Rs 920. Dr.Reddy's and Wipro were down over 1% each to Rs 1,481 and Rs 549, respectively.

OTHER GAINERS & LOSERS

Sadbhav Engineering and Mahindra Gesco zoomed over 17% each to Rs 607 and Rs 637, respectively. FCS Software, Gujarat Alkalies, Alps Industries, Zensar, Reliance Industrial Infrastructure, Jindal Saw Pipes, IDBI and Kotak Bank were the other major gainers today.

Garware Polyester slumped nearly 9% to Rs 54.40. Astra Micro, Aksh Optifibre, Tata Sponge, R S Software, West Coast, Blue Dart, Thirumalai, AIA Engineering, Ispat Industries and JSW Steel were the other porminent losers.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Satyam topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 391.73 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 329.15 crore), Tata Steel (Rs 268.04 crore), Sadbhav Engineering (Rs 184.52 crore) and Reliance Communication Ventures (Rs 135.27 crore).

IFCI led the volume chart with trades of around 1.28 crore shares followed by Essar Oil (74.06 lakh), MTNL (63.77 lakh), Satyam (47.39 lakh) and SpiceJet (45.23 lakh).
