Sensex gains 39 points to 10,804

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 31 points at 10,796. Fresh buying in the opening deals saw the index zoom to a new all-time intra-day high of 10,884 - up 119 points from its previous close.

Intra-day profit booking saw the index pare gains, and finally close the first day of the holiday-shortened week with a gain of 39 points at 10,804.

The Nifty has gained 19 points to 3,203.

Technology stocks were in demand today. The BSE Teck Index surged 1.4% to 2584. The BSE Oil & Gas Index was the other notable gainer at 4547 - up 0.8%.

The market breadth was negative. Out of 2,638 stocks traded, 1,439 declined, 1,143 advanced and the rest were unchanged today.

TCS rallied 3.4% to Rs 1,825. Wipro surged 2.6% to Rs 533, and Satyam added 1.7% to Rs 830. Infosys was up Rs 19 at Rs 2,933.

HDFC Bank, ONGC and Bajaj Auto advanced over 2% each to Rs 769, Rs 1,178 and Rs 2,808, respectively.

NTPC gained 1.7% at Rs 139. Tata Steel, Bharti Tele, SBI and Larsen & Toubro were up 1% each at Rs 460, Rs 388, Rs 929 and Rs 2,536, respectively.

ICICI Bank declined 1.6% to Rs 603.

HDFC and Gujarat Ambuja slipped 1.4% each to Rs 1,304 and Rs 97.80, respectively.

Grasim (Rs 1,864), ITC (Rs 175) and Hero Honda (Rs 895) also dropped over 1% each.

While 268 stocks hit their upper limits, 198 touched their lower limits today.

Pantaloon Retail zoomed over 14% to Rs 1,966. Rayban, Shriram Transport, Reliance Natural Resources, Ruchi Soya, Bajaj Hindustan, GTL, GHCL, Sona Koya, MphasiS BFL, Escorts, Tamilnadu Newsprint, Adlabs, Infotech Enterprise, Nagarjuna Constructions, Dhampur Sugar, Celebrity Fashions, Bongaigaon Refinery, Reliance Communication Ventures (RCoVL) and HCL Infosys ended with sharp gains today.

JK Cement slumped nearly 12% to Rs 149. GIC Housing Finance, Sakuma Exports, Jayant Agro, iGate Global, Crew Boss, Archies, Everest Industries, Goodricke, Sathavana, Mysore Cement, Kalpatru Power, Hindustan Zinc, Indo Gulf Fertilisers, Punjab Tractors, Ingersoll Rand and Ramco System plunged 4-10% each.

RCoVL topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 230.14 crore followed by SBI (Rs 129.17 crore), Suzlon (Rs 88.85 crore), Infosys (Rs 84.53 crore) and Gujarat Petronet (Rs 82.33 crore).

Gujarat Petronet led the volume chart with trades of around 2.22 crore shares followed by Mazda (77.22 lakh), RCoVL (72.26 lakh), GTL (52.56 lakh) and Reliance Energy Ventures (37.20 lakh).

The markets are closed on Wednesday on account of Holi.
