Sensex gains 53 points at close; Reliance up 3%

A broad-based rally saw the Sensex recoup some lost ground after the hammering over the last two days.

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of five points at 6,372. Sustained buying in heavyweights saw the index zoom to a high of 6,440 - a gain of 73 points from the previous close.

The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 53 points (0.83%) at 6,420. The NSE Nifty gained 17 points to move to 2015.

While 17 index scrips advanced with a volume of 1.32 crore shares totalling Rs 767 crore, 13 declined with a volume of 45 lakh shares for Rs 146 crore.

Heavyweights finished on a bullish note. Reliance advanced nearly 3% (Rs 15) to Rs 541. SBI gained 1.75% (Rs 11) to Rs 615. ITC was up 1.7% (Rs 22) at Rs 1,298. Infosys moved up Rs 8 to Rs 2,051, and ONGC gained over a per cent (Rs 8) to Rs 792. HLL, however, was down a rupee at Rs 141.

ACC was up 2% (Rs 7) at Rs 350. Gujarat Ambuja was also up 2% (Rs 10) to Rs 426. Grasim, however, was down Rs 5 at Rs 1,291.

Bajaj advanced 2% (Rs 23) to Rs 1,095. While Maruti was up Rs 3 at Rs 440, Tata Motors was down Rs 2 at Rs 493.

While Satyam was up 2% (Rs 9) at Rs 387, Wipro was up 1.5% (Rs 10) at Rs 699.

L&T zoomed 3.6% (Rs 33) to Rs 972. Tisco added 1.6% (Rs 6) to Rs 361.

Reliance Energy slipped 3% (Rs 17) to Rs 528. Zee declined 3.5% (Rs 6) to Rs 163. HDFC dropped 1.5% (Rs 11) to Rs 727. BHEL was down Rs 2 at Rs 737. Bharti was down a notch at Rs 211.

Sensex @ 1510 hrs

The market in late noon trades is witnessing a significant buying support. Strong surge in Reliance, SBI, tech and other select old economy stocks has propelled the gains of the index to a current high of 6,436.

The Sensex has surged 64 points to 6,431. The Nifty has advanced 20 points to 2,018.

Reliance has gained more ground, and has flared up 3.34% (Rs 18) to Rs 543. ITC is up a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 1,284, while HLL is still marginally down at Rs 142.

Infosys (up Rs 12 to Rs 2,055) has bounced back into the green after early losses. While Satyam has advanced 2.40% (Rs 9) to Rs 388, Wipro has added 1.56% (Rs 11) to Rs 700.

SBI has scaled up 2.22% (Rs 13) to Rs 618. While HDFC Bank has inched up a per cent (Rs 5) to Rs 490, ICICI Bank is up 1.36% (Rs 5) at Rs 359. ONGC is trading off-highs with a gain of 1.49% (Rs 12) at Rs 796. Tisco is up 2.25% (Rs 8) at Rs 363.

Gujarat Ambuja and ACC have moved up 2% each to Rs 425 (up Rs 9) and Rs 351 (up Rs 7), respectively. Grasim is marginally up at Rs 1,296.

Bharti is down a rupee, after slipping over 4% since the mid-morning trades. While HDFC has lost 1.52% (Rs 11) to Rs 727, Reliance Energy is down 2% (Rs 11) at Rs 534. Zee (down Rs 4 or 2.58% to Rs 164) is still subdued.  Metal stocks have risen sharply. Man Industries has notched up 7.33% gains (Rs 7) to Rs 107. While Lloyd Steel has firmed up 6.42% to Rs 14, Ispat is up 5% at Rs 22.

PSL, Tata Metals, Jisco, Gujarat NRE Coke, Essar Steel, Sterlite Industries and Jindal Vijaynagar Steel are up in a range of 3-5%.  Select counters have strengthened on the back of strong buying support. Petronet LNG has shot up 16.50% (Rs 6) to Rs 42, and Morepen Lab has flared up 10.75% to Rs 12.57.

While Max India has surged 10.13% to Rs 295, Mid-day Multimedia has mopped up 9.92% gains to Rs 66. Avaya Global and NDTV are up 8% each at Rs 308 and Rs 140, respectively.

West Coast Paper and Graphite India are also trading with steep gains. Alka India has topped the volume table with over 90.48 lakh shares traded, followed by Petronet LNG (81.21 lakh), Himachal Futuristics (60.44 lakh), Royal Airways (56.91 lakh) and Tata Tele (52.3 lakh), respectively.

Reliance, with a turnover of Rs 143 crore, is leading the value chart, followed by Infosys (Rs 130 crore), Tisco (Rs 74 crore), SBI (Rs 57 crore) and Satyam (Rs 45 crore), respectively.

Sensex @ 1345 hrs

After moving in a narrow range between 10-15 points higher in early noon trades, the market is now marginally up on stock-specific activity.

The Sensex, as a result, is now up three points at 6,370, and the Nifty is up two points at 2,000.

Reliance is holding on to its gains at Rs 534 - up Rs 8 or 1.53%. ITC (up Rs 5 to Rs 1,282) is trading in a narrow range. HLL is trading down a notch at Rs 141.

SBI is up a per cent (Rs 6) at Rs 610. HDFC Bank at Rs 488 (up Rs 3) and ICICI Bank at Rs 356 (up Rs 2) are trading with steady gains.

ONGC has inched below Rs 800-mark, but is still up 1.76% (Rs 14) at Rs 798. L&T has added 2.15% (Rs 20) to Rs 959.

Gujarat Ambuja has gained 1.89% (Rs 8) to Rs 424. While ACC is still up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 347, Grasim is subdued at Rs 1,290 - down Rs 6.

Infosys (down Rs 24 or 1.18% to Rs 2,019) is trading in a narrow range. While Satyam is unchanged with a gain of 1.16% (Rs 4) at Rs 383, Wipro is still up a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 694.

Bharti continues to slide on the back of sustained selling pressure. The counter has slumped 4% (Rs 9) to Rs 202. While Reliance Energy has lost 1.79% (Rs 10) to Rs 535, Tata Power is down 1.85% (Rs 7) at Rs 369. Zee has declined 2.55% (Rs 4) to Rs 164.

Sensex @ 1225 hrs

The market continues to display a cautious trend after reporting hectic activity in the early trades.

The Sensex has shed most of its gains from its early highs following weakness in pharma and auto counters, and paring of gains in cement, banking and select heavyweights. It is now up 12 points at 6,379.

The Nifty also has come off its early higs, and is now up 4 points at 2,002.

Reliance has added 1.72% (Rs 9) to Rs 535. ITC (up Rs 9 to Rs 1,286) is trading with steady gains. HLL is still marginally up at Rs 142.

ONGC has advanced 1.94% (Rs 15) to Rs 800.  SBI at Rs 610 (up Rs 5) and HDFC Bank at Rs 488 (up Rs 3) are largely unchanged from their earlier gains. ICICI Bank is up a rupee at Rs 355.

Gujarat Ambuja (up Rs 7 or 1.62% to Rs 423) and ACC (up Rs 3 to Rs 346) have trimmed their gains on profit-taking. Grasim, however, is trading lower by Rs 5 at Rs 1,291.

Infosys (down Rs 23 or 1.13% to Rs 2,020) is still languishing in negative territory. While Satyam is still up 1.25% (Rs 5) at Rs 383, Wipro has clocked a per cent gain (Rs 6) to Rs 695.

Ranbaxy is down a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 1,200. Dr. Reddy's and Cipla are trading with marginal losses at Rs 798 and Rs 292, respectively.  Bharti has witnessed further selling, and the counter has slumped 3.41% (Rs 7) to Rs 204. While HDFC has shed 2% (Rs 15) to Rs 723, Reliance Energy has declined 1.88% (Rs 10) to Rs 535. Zee has lost nearly 3% (Rs 4) to Rs 164.

L&T, however, is holding firm with a gain of 2% (Rs 19) at Rs 958. Tisco is up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 358.

Sensex @ 1115 hrs

The markets witnessed hectic activity in the early trades. After touching an early high of 6,411 and a low of 6,347, the index in current trades has bounced back into the green as buying has picked up in select heavyweights, banking, cement and other old economy stocks.

The Sensex is now up 31 points at 6,398. The Nifty has gained 13 points to 2,011.

Reliance has advanced 1.17% (Rs 6) to Rs 532. While ITC has moved up a per cent (Rs 10) to Rs 1,287, HLL is trading a tad lower at Rs 142.

SBI has jumped 1.52% (Rs 9) to Rs 614. While ICICI Bank is up 1.23% (Rs 4) at Rs 358, HDFC Bank is up Rs 2 at Rs 487.  ONGC has scaled up 2.10% (Rs 16) to Rs 801.

Gujarat Ambuja has gained nearly 2.45% (Rs 10) to Rs 426, and ACC is up 1.27% (Rs 4) at Rs 348. Grasim is marginally down at Rs 1,297.

Bajaj, after a firm opening, has slipped into the red to Rs 1,055 - down Rs 16 or 1.51%.  HDFC has shed 2.33% (Rs 17) to Rs 721. Bharti has lost nearly 2% (Rs 4) to Rs 207, after a positive opening.

L&T, however, has added 1.37% (Rs 13) to Rs 952. Tisco has gained 1.90% (Rs 7) to Rs 362.  Infosys, after a weak opening, is down a per cent (Rs 20) at Rs 2,023.

While Satyam is up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 382, Wipro is trading with a modest gain of Rs 4 at Rs 693.

Sensex @ 1015 hrs

Buying at lower levels in heavyweights, select banking, auto and other old economy stocks has seen the Sensex gains 22 points to 6,389 in the opening trades.

The Nifty has crossed the 2,000 level in early trades, and is up 10 points at 2,008.

Reliance is up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 530. While ITC is up Rs 3 at Rs 1,280, HLL is up a tad at Rs 142.

SBI is up a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 610, while ICICI Bank has added 1.65% (Rs 6) to Rs 360.

ONGC has clocked a per cent gain (Rs 8) to Rs 792.  Bajaj has jumped 3% (Rs 33) to Rs 1,104 in early trades, and Maruti is up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 441. Hero Honda and Tata Motors have opened marginally lower at Rs 575 and Rs 495, respectively.

Bharti is up 1.28% (Rs 3) at Rs 214. Hindalco has slipped sharply in the opening trades to Rs 1,329 - down Rs 38 or 2.78%.

Infosys has opened weak with a loss of 1.23% (Rs 25) at Rs 2,018. Wipro at Rs 692 (up Rs 3) and Satyam at Rs 381 (up Rs 2) have commenced with steady gains.
