January 25, 2011 09:03 IST

India Posts on Monday said it will introduce a flat rate for sending packages anywhere in the world.

For example, a person can send a one kg package for a flat rate of Rs 1,000, irrespective of the destination.

The rates would be dependent on the weight of the package. India Posts has signed agreements with countries like China, Australia, France and South Africa, who are also looking at adopting the same practice.

"It has been decided to have international parcel flat rate boxes one rate for delivery anywhere in the world, priority shipments with universal barcodes and logistic services especially with those countries," Department of Posts (DoP) Secretary Radhika Duraiswamy said in a statement.

She added that the department will also provide international Express Mail Services (EMS) for express delivery of documents and parcels up to 35 kg. Express Mail Service offers faster delivery, but at an extra cost.
