SAP AG is planning to set up a second development centre and open 22 training centres in India, buoyed on an increase in demand from the small and medium enterprises in the country.

The world's biggest provider of business software has garnered 1,000 customers from India and has also plans to localise its suite for Indian SMEs.

The new development centre will be set up in Gurgaon, and will be in addition to its existing centre in Bangalore. The company intends to set up training centres in smaller cities and train around 2,000 personnel on advanced technologies and solutions, SAP South Asia president and chief executive officer Alan Sedghi said.

He, however, did not divulge investments that would be required for its expansion plans in the country.

Sedghi said India is a growing market, apart from major companies, the SME segment and government have also shown interest in SAP's products. India accounts for 14-15 per cent of SAP's global revenue.

"SAP aims to increase the pace of growth in India and enhance its market share across segments. SAP had already opened offices in Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune and will continue to open offices in Ludhiana and a few other cities for enhanced market presence," he said.

On the growth plan for the recently launched SAP Business One, Alan said, "We have HP as our national distributor and plan to sign on a couple of more distributors, including IBM, in the next few weeks. We expect to have around 100 resellers operating through our distributors by the end of the year".

In India, SAP has completed a decade of operation and also became the first business software solutions provider to cross 1,000-customer mark.

Some of the client wins include SBI, Coal Mines Provident Fund Organization, Ranbaxy Fine Chemicals, Donear Suitings, Lloyds Metal & Engineering and MSN Labs among others.

The company today kicked off its SAP Summit 2006, the largest business and technology forum in the country, which is attended by over 2000 delegates including, SAP customers, partners, analysts and SAP leadership team.
