Samsung India Electronics on Tuesday said that it would launch a slew of hi-end mobile phones in India this year targeting the consumer segment looking for upgrades.

"We will launch five to six different mobile handset models in the country in the next eight to 12 months. These products would set industry benchmarks and help us cater to the customer segment looking for upgrade," Samsung Electronics India general manager (telecom) Anuj kapur said.

The company on Tuesday showcased the six mobile phone models with features such as 5 megapixel camera (SCH-S250), optical zoom (SCH-S230), hard disc drive (SPH-V5400), phone supporting satellite digital multimedia broadcast (SCH-B100), video on demand phone (SCH-V600) and smart phone with video on demand (MITS M500).

He said price of the new phones would be decided later.

These phones have been globally launched on Tuesday, director, sales and marketing, South West Asia of Samsung H C Ryu said, adding the launch of some of the phones in India would also depend on the services provided by the telecom companies.

Samsung's mobile handsets' global sales grew 30 per cent in 2003, he said, adding the company expected similar growth in 2004 and the current year.

In India too, the handset sales is growing rapidly, Kapur said but declined to spell out targets or growth figures.
