The Union Road Transport and Highways Minister B C Khanduri on Wednesday said the 5,846 km long Golden Quadrilateral project would be almost over by 2005.

The 45 per cent of the GQ project covering 2,650 km would be ready by the end of this year, he said, adding that almost 96 per cent construction work would be over by June 2005.

On the Kashmir-Kanyakumari and Silchar-Surashtra highway corridor, he said the ministry aims to begin the construction work at all the starting points before the end of the current fiscal.

A total of 3,500 km of the North-South and East-West highway corridor is under various stages of completion, while 537 km of this 7,300 km national highway project is already in use.

He also said the World Bank had cleared the funds needed for the 87-km long Allahabad bypass project and the work would begin soon.

Regarding the delay in completion of projects, he said, "The biggest challenge that we are facing relates to acquiring land for highway construction as it happens to be a state subject."

The scenario relating to land acquisition is particularly bad in some states, Khandhuri said, adding the experience in Maharashtra and Karnataka was not very encouraging, while it posed no problems in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
