Communications Minister Arun Shourie on Thursday said a report submitted by the Telecom Engineering Committee had indicted Reliance Infocomm for violating licence norms.
"The TEC report said Reliance was found to have violated the spirit of the licence conditions. The group of ministers (GoM) on telecom has taken note of the findings, which will be brought before the Cabinet," Shourie said after the GoM met on Thursday.
Refuting the charges made by the TEC, a Reliance Infocomm spokesperson said, "We will like to reiterate that Reliance Infocomm has always conformed to the terms and conditions of its licence and will continue to do so to offer the best service to millions of customers in India at the most affordable price. The company believes that this will help India exceed the teledensity targets set in the Tenth Plan and propel rapid all-round socio-economic growth in the country."
Earlier, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had also written to the department of telecom over the fact that wireless-in-local-loop limited mobility operators, like Reliance Infocomm, were offering services like call forwarding in violation of the spirit of the licence norms.
Trai had asked DoT to ban all such services.
