In one of the largest-ever subscriber accretion in the Indian telecom sector, Reliance Communications has added an average of one million customers each month during the past four months.

The Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group firm has roped in over four million users during the period, increasing its total subscriber base to 20 million as on March 31.

The customer acquisitions were buoyant on a slew of new initiatives, including a lifetime free incoming offer, SMS bonanza and One India plan among others.

The company's expansion into newer geographies also contributed to the addition of customers, which was recorded between December 2005 and March 2006, industry sources said in Mumbai on Monday.

The customer additions touched the zenith by the end of March 2006, with Reliance Communications adding over 1.5 million subscribers during the month.

The company's CDMA subscriber base grew by 5 per cent month-on-month, while its GSM operations posted a 6 per cent growth.

At present, Reliance Communications offers CDMA services in 21 telecom circles and GSM in eight circles in eastern and central India.

Other players in the telecom sector were also adding subscribers, but only Reliance has managed to add one million per month continuously. The additions of others varied, with companies posting an average of 700,000 to 800,000 new connections during the period.

Reliance Communications had launched a range of initiatives, like lifetime incoming free on pre-paid in December which resulted in an increase in subscriber base.

The company's 'One Nation, One Tariff', lifetime incoming free on post-paid, reduction of fixed wireless phone tariff, 15 paise recharge voucher and free outgoing calls and SMS bonanza plans pushed subscriber numbers in January.
