April 02, 2015 09:37 IST

The answer to the eternal question of 'Kitna deti hai' is finally here as MotorBeam lists the top fuel efficient cars in India.

In a country obsessed with saving fortunes, fuel efficiency plays a major role in India with almost everything revolving around the coveted economy figure.

With buying decisions changing at the flick of the figure, we list the most fuel efficient vehicles in the country that have been able to provide an extra kilometre on every drop for every drop of fuel, saving you loads of money.

Let's take a look at the top fuel efficient vehicles in India.

Chevrolet Beat
Rank: 5
Mileage: 25.44 km/l

Easily the most unexpected name to begin with, the sporty Chevrolet Beat is also the most frugal hatchback on sale in the country today and uses a 998cc diesel engine under its hood (the smallest production diesel engine on sale in India) that produces 57 HP of power and 150 Nm of torque.

With its compact proportions, the Beat is capable of delivering an impressive ARAI fuel economy figure of 25.44 km/l that makes it a puny yet efficient performer.

Honda Amaze
Rank:
4
Mileage: 25.8 km/l

Another best seller from Honda, the Amaze is only second to the Maruti DZire in the compact sedan space and is a consistent performer on the roads and the sales chart.

Drawing power from the new 1.5-litre Earth Dreams i-DTEC diesel motor producing 100 PS, the Amaze is only marginally behind the City with a fuel efficiency figure of 25.8 km/l.

Honda City
Rank: 3
Mileage:26 km/l

The fourth generation Honda City changed the fortunes of the Japanese automaker and the car itself surpassed all records on the sales front.

A C-segment offering, the all-new City manages to offer an excellent mix of performance and fuel efficiency with the same 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine churning out 100 PS and helps return a fuel efficiency number of 26 km/l.

Maruti Ciaz
Rank: 2
Mileage:26.21 km/l

Maruti Suzuki's answer to the legendary Honda City, the Ciaz C-segment sedan is not only high on space and equipment, but fuel-efficient as well. Powered by same 1.3-litre DDiS diesel motor that is tuned to produce 90 PS of power, the Ciaz returns an impressive fuel economy of 26.21 km/l.

Maruti Swift DZire
Rank: 1
Mileage: 26.59 km/l

India's best selling compact sedan, the Maruti Swift DZire cuts out as the most fuel-efficient offering in the country and only recently went through a mid-life cycle update receiving tweaks to the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine that produces 75 PS of power and returns an ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 26.59 km/l, the highest seen on any car in India.

All figures mentioned above are ARAI certified and tested under ideal conditions.

Real world conditions, driver abilities and braking performance are also contributing factors to the fuel economy of the vehicle. That being said, the ARAI fuel efficiency is difficult to achieve and also nearly impossible.
