India has 250 million telephone users

Sustaining a growth momentum in the telecom industry, India added 7.89 million new telephone connections in October, reaching the 250 million subscriber base ahead of target.

The government had set a target of 250 million telephone users by the end of December 2007.

The gross telephone connection reached 256.55 million at the end of October as compared to 248.66 million in September, according to figures released by telecom regulator TRAI.

The overall tele-density reached 22.52 per cent at the end of October as against 21.85 per cent in September. In the wireless segment, there was an addition of 8.05 million users as against 7.80 million last month.

The total wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA and WLL (F)) base touched 217.14 million at the end of October 2007.

In the wireline segment, subscriber base decreased to 39.41 million in the month of October as against 39.58 million in September.

The total number of broadband subscribers touched 2.69 million by the end of the month, compared to 2.67 million by the end of September.
