Indian companies are at an infancy stage when it comes to obtaining revenues from patent licensing, according to Nagendra Setty, a representative of the world famous law firm, Jones Day.
Setty was speaking on the sidelines of a seminar on "Emerging trends in Intellectual Property", which was organised in co ordination with another Bangalore-based law firm, Krishnamurthy & Co.
Speaking to Business Standard, Setty said, "Indian companies are mostly serving MNCs that are utilising cheap and talented work pool. The Indian talent pool is helping MNCs to own the technology. Creation of IPR is one of the company's biggest asset."
According to him, the US market of revenues from patent licensing has increased from $15 billion in 1990 to $110 billion in 2000. This is projected to grow even further to touch $300 billion by 2009.
"It will be a significant achievement if India could achieve even 1 per cent of this figure by 2009. IBM and Texas Instruments make revenues of nearly $1 billion and $800 million from patent licensing," Setty said.
