Now, accident cover for train travel

July 24, 2016 20:08 IST

Similar to a travel insurance that is purchased during booking flight tickets online, those booking tickets on IRCTC’s website would get an option to purchase insurance for their train journey

With the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) planning to launch insurance scheme for passengers from September onwards, all those booking tickets from its website will be able to avail of a personal accident cover.

Insurers including Shriram General, Royal Sundaram and ICICI Lombard General Insurance will provide the cover.

Sanjay Datta, chief-underwriting and claims, ICICI Lombard, said that the insurance would provide coverage against personal accident and disabilities caused due to accidents. He added that for hospitalisation, too, compensation would be provided by the insurance company.

Premiums would be less than Rs 2 for a cover of Rs 10 lakh. While it was earlier expected that only public sector insurers would provide the cover, three private general insurers would be on board.

Similar to a travel insurance that is purchased during booking flight tickets online, those booking tickets on IRCTC’s website would get an option to purchase insurance for their train journey. If a passenger wishes to add an insurance policy, she can do so at a click of a button.
