Wipro Technologies, the global IT services arm of Wipro Limited, and Motorola have formed a joint venture, WMNetServ, to deliver managed services for telecom operators.

Motorola is believed to have signed a similar agreement with Tech Mahindra, whose details may be announced on Wednesday.

Wipro said it would hold a majority stake in the JV and the responsibility of getting clients will be with Motorola. Wipro will be delivering the services on an end-to-end basis.

This JV would initially focus on Motorola's existing client base and would offer end-to-end solutions right from rolling out a network to its optimisation and maintenance.

Wipro would manage these services through a network operations centre at Delhi and Bangalore that will integrate with Motorola's existing network operating centres in North America and Europe to provide round-the-clock network monitoring capabilities to customers.

Declining to state the kind of revenue expected or the number of people to be appointed, Rao said, "We have a good funnel of clients and we would hire as and when we get projects."

"WMNetServ enables customers to benefit from Motorola's expertise in wireless technology and services, and leverage Wipro's global delivery model in telecom outsourcing to offer scalable operations and implementations of turnkey solutions," added Rao.

WMNetServ would be led by a Wipro representative while the board of directors would have representation from Wipro and Motorola senior management.

According to Mercer Management Consulting, the global managed & advisory services market is expected to almost double during the next four years, reaching $48 billion by 2010, from $26 billion in 2005.

This growth reflects an industry-wide shift from the traditional use of in-house teams to manage network operations and maintenance to more flexible, managed services models that allow operators to better focus on critical business functions, while upgrading to next-generation capabilities.
