Indian steel baron Lakshmi Mittal is missing from the latest list of the 500 richest individuals living in the United Kingdom.

Mittal's wealth has been previously estimated at more than £2 billion, marking him out as the UK's richest Indian and the world's second largest steel producer.

But, as the latest list compiled by researcher Philip Beresford is based on cash assets, Mittal and other wealthy Indians have been omitted.

They have given way to Flightbookers' founder Dinesh Dhamija whose 2002 annual salary is revealed as £332,771.

He also sold £9.45 million worth of shares in November 2002.

Dhamija, the son of a former Indian Ambassador to Kabul, is ranked 80 in the new rich list.

Fashion retalier Tom Singh, who was paid an annual salary of £256,909 last year, is ranked 229th in the list.

Meanwhile, Pakistani barrister Rehna Azim has compiled a separate list of Asian high achievers. This list shows how first and second generation immigrants from the subcontinent have reached high levels of professional and educational success in the UK.

This list is based on professional achievement rather than wealth, and includes journalists, authors, lawyers, actors and doctors.

Among those included is Mumbai-born lawyer Sarosh Zaiwalla, who recently accompanied the Lord Mayor of the City of London on a ground-breaking trip to win business contracts in China.

"This list of influential movers and shakers who help make up Britain's infrastructure does the immigrant proud," Azim is quoted as saying.

"No matter what form their success has taken, everyone on this list is an integral part of the culture of modern Britain and forms part of the backbone of major British institutions."
