Tata Steel MD to serve on UN group

Managing director of Tata Steel B Muthuraman and vice chairman of Goldman Sachs group Suzanne Nora Johnson are among the 20 business labour and civil society leaders named by the UN to serve on the board of the group set up to advance globalisation and fight corruption.

The group called Global Contact was launched six years ago by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to advance globalisation, fight corruption, promote human rights and provide strategic advice to the initiative and its stakeholders.

It includes representatives of 10 businesses, four business associations and labour groups and four civil society organisations.

Others on the Board include president and CEO of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance co of Japan Hiroyuki Uemura and chair of toymaker Lego Professor Mads Oevlisen of Denmark.

Besides India, the United States, Japan and Denmark, the members hail from businesses based in China, France and South Korea. Also represented are the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers, the International Chamber of Commerce.

More than 2,500 companies in over 90 countries now are members of the Compact along with 50 regional networks.
