India yet to make a mark in mango exports: TNAU

January 06, 2006 04:23 IST

Although India produces 50 per cent of the mangoes produced in world, the country is yet to make a mark on the export front, according to a release from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

Though there were over 1,000 varieties of mango in the country, exports from India were meagre compared to that from other countries, owing to fragile linkages among stakeholders in the mango supply chain.

Mango exporters from Australia, Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa and Israel dominate the international market, the release said.

To promote the production and export of mango and to improve the supply chain, the mango growers from various districts of Tamil Nadu have expressed the need for forming 'Tamil Nadu Mango Growers Federation', an apex body to address the issues regarding mango production, the release said.

The decision was taken by a group of mango growers at a one-day workshop organised by the faculty of horticulture at the TNAU recently.

E Vadivelu, dean (Horticulture), TNAU, said in the release that all those in the mango supply chain should exchange ideas so that they can understand the problems clearly and come up with effective action plans.
