Telecom industry condoles Mahajan's death

May 03, 2006 20:38 IST
The telecom industry has condoled the death of former Communication and IT Minister and BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, while describing him as one of the dynamic and charismatic leaders.

"The passing away of Pramod Mahajan at such a young age is a big loss for the nation and will certainly leave a void in the Indian political arena. I have had the privilege of working closely with him during his stint as Union Minister for IT & Telecom and he was one of most dynamic and charismatic political leaders of this country. We share the grief of his family and loved ones," Sunil Mittal, chairman of Bharti Group said.

Association of CDMA operators said Mahajan was instrumental in bringing parity in the two types of technologies - CDMA and GSM - in the telecom sector and termed him as a "person for common man."

"Mahajan wanted telephones to reach the common man and had said that his job as the telecom minister was to see that telephone reaches every nook and corner of the country. He also encouraged operators to go to rural areas," S K Khanna, Secretary General of Association for CDMA operators said. Mahajan was telecom and IT minister in Vajpayee's government.
