Vijay Mallya-promoted Kingfisher Airlines will increase the number of first class seats from 20 to 32. It will launch Kingfisher First, a first class option from May 19, in the Delhi-Mumbai route.

The facility will be extended to Goa, Kochi soon and other destinations at a later stage.

"The propensity to spend, apart from the willingness to spend, is growing. The country's corporate sector is witnessing growth. In this context, we are raising our bar once again by introducing Kingfisher First," said Vijay Mallya, chairman, Kingfisher Airlines.

Mallya said the airline is confident about the success of the venture; so, it is planning to increase the number of seats to 32 from the current 20 in the yet to be inducted Airbus 321s.

The airline has knocked off 60 odd seats to induct just 20 first class seats with more leg room and entertainment options.

"The cost of upgrading existing Airbus A320 aircraft to install Kingfisher First is one million dollar per aircraft. But we offer superior quality for those who want to fly by sitting in front," Mallya said.

Sources said, initially the airline would upgrade and induct Kingfisher First in three aircraft.

The first of the few aircraft with first class would touch Indian skies from May 19.

The Kingfisher First offers the plush Sleeperatte seats with a 48-inch pitch and 125 degree recline supported by adjustable headrests and fully extendable footrests.

In addition, the option will offer the latest audio and video on demand system that is available on the extra-wide personalised video screens with the comfort of noise cancelling stereo headphones.

According to company sources, the first class is priced at 15 to 20 per cent higher than rival Jet Airways' business class. "The cost of travel in Kingfisher First is four times higher than that of Kingfisher Class (Economy Class)," they added.

Kingfisher Airlines commenced operations on May 9, 2005, with a brand new fleet.
