US-based Kanbay Inc, which sets up computer and software systems that classify customers and facilitate payments, plans to expand its staff in India by more than 50 per cent in 2003 to 1,900 people.

Kanbay said in a statement it would set up a 700-strong technology centre in Bangalore that would start operating by December and treble its staff in India to about 3,000 in three years.

Chicago-based Kanbay, whose global clients include insurance, banking and credit card companies, now employs 1,200 people at a technology centre in the western city of Pune.

"Kanbay India has been able to provide global expertise and local advantage in an effective way, hence our strategy is to make India an even stronger destination for Kanbay Inc.," said Cyprian D'Souza, Kanbay India's chief executive officer.

Global giants are rapidly scaling up software centres and outsourcing back-office work to India, attracted by the nation's large pool of skilled engineers and graduates, available at a fraction of what their counterparts overseas earn.

Founded in 1989, Kanbay Inc has a total staff strength of about 1,500. Its investors include high-tech investment firm Safeguard Scientifics Inc. and Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.
