7448 IT jobs created in last 5 yrs in Bengal

As many as 93 information technology companies have created 7448 jobs in the state in the past five years.

"93 IT companies were operational in the state by the end of March 2010 and together these companies have generated 7448 jobs. The state government has allotted 177.26 acres of land to these firms", said state IT minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi.

Out of the total of 7448 jobs created in the IT sector, the highest have been in Khurda district at 7183, followed by Rourkela at 158, Baleswar and Ganjam districts at 50 each and seven at Cuttack.

Besides the big four of the IT sector- Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Technologies, Wipro Technologies and Mahindra Satyam (formerly Satyam Computers), the state also has the units of the home grown entrepreneurs in the sector like JSS IT Solutions Ltd, SRB Consultancy Ltd, Tatwa Technologies Ltd and Kalinga Software Ltd to name a few.

Majhi informed that the state IT department is going ahead with a host of e-governance projects like State Wide Area Network, State Data Centre and Common Services Centres.

Out of the targeted 8554 CSCs, the infrastructure has been readied for 5843 centres while 3097 centres are currently operational.

The state government had sent proposals to the Government of India for the notification of IT SEZs (Special Economic Zones) at Chandaka Industrial Estate and Janla on the outskirts of the city. While the IT SEZ to be developed over 250 acres at Chandaka has been notified, formal notification is awaited for the SEZ status of the 400 acres of land identified at Janla.
