June 19, 2006 16:20 IST

The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) on Monday inked a memorandum of understanding with US-based Duke Corporate Education to provide 'customised corporate education programmes' in India and the Middle East.

"This programme will be a unique initiative and a first of its kind in the country," IIM-A director, Bakul Dholakia told reporters after signing the MoU with the officials of Duke CE.

"The customised corporate education programmes are designed specifically to meet the needs of a targetted group of managers in one single company," Dholakia added.

"Duke CE (Durham, USA) is the world's leading provider of customised corporate education in the world and in collaboration with them we plan to develop high-level managerial talent in India and Middle-East," he said, adding that they will also focus on corporates from South-East Asia in the future.

"If India has to achieve a growth rate of 10 per cent, then the corporate sector has to grow by 12 to 14 per cent every year. For this kind of growth the existing managerial pool is not enough, we need to train and develop the skills of top managers of our corporate sector," Dholakia explained.

According to Blair Sheppard, the CEO of Duke CE, "the programmes that will be offered will be short duration courses ranging between 15 days to several months.

"This programme will be customised as per the needs of the corporate clients," Blair said.

He said that the programmes will be not be a standardized product and will be a "departure from the traditional educational model."

As per the estimation of Blair, an individual who will undergo this programme will have to pay fees ranging between $100 to $6,000 per day.

According to Dholakia, Indian MNCs having global aspirations and wanting to acquire assets overseas will be first target group of this programme.

The programme will be based in the new IIM-A campus at Vastrapur in Ahmedabad, Dholakia said adding, the training of the managers will be done at the corporate campus of the client or at IIMA.
