Hewlett-Packard on Tuesday said it is expecting a 30 per cent growth in printer sales in India this year.

"We will ship one million printers this year, a growth of 30 per cent over 2004," Ravi Aggarwal, Hewlett-Packard India vice president, imaging and printing group said.

He said the company was growing in all categories of printers, where its market share ranges from 60 per cent in some segments to 90 per cent in some high-end categories.

"We are interested in growing the market," Aggarwal said.  He said the next wave of growth in printing would be come from photo printers.

"Digital studios and consumers are moving towards use of photo printers. There are roughly 100,000 photo studios in India and more than 1,00,000 camera phones and 3,000 digital cameras are sold each month," the company said pointing to the huge opportunity in the category.

Aggarwal said Hewlett-Packard was shipping around 80,000 to 90,000 printers a month of which 20,000 are multi-functional devices. Of the 20,000 multi-functional devices, half are photo printers, he said.

The company has 60 per cent share of photo printer market and more than 80 per cent of the buyers are home users.

Hewlett-Packard on Tuesday launched three new photo printers priced between Rs 5,499 to Rs 27,999.

The highest-end printer launched Tuesday is the world's only photo printer with nine colours. "Traditionally photo printers have eight colours but PS 8758 has an extra colour - blue - which ensures that photographs are more vivid," the company said.

The traditional printers had eight colours and blue colour was achieved by mixing the basic eight colours.
