Hindustan Lever Limited has invested around Rs 400 crore (Rs 4 billion) in the past four years in the north-east to set up manufacturing facilities for its personal lifestyle products.

"Apart from this, we have also invested around Rs 300-400 crore (Rs 3 – Rs 4 billion) in tea plantations in the region. These facilities are employing around 1,000 people," HLL chairman MS Banga said at the inaugural session of the second North-East Business Summit.

Banga also said the company's tea plantations in the region employ around 30,000 people directly and support another 10,000.

He also called upon the eight state governments to work towards establishing a common market or platform to provide new business opportunities to the corporates. "This is important so that the industry can view the entire region as one single market," Banga said.

Addressing the summit, Banga asked the governments to form a joint industry-government task force to look into the problems faced by the tea plantation industry and take steps to improve productivity and quality of the products.

He also asked the government to take urgent steps to bring peace in the region for creating a conducive atmosphere for business and industry.

Citing an example of tea plantation business, Banga said: "Tea plantation business is getting sick and may face the same fate of jute and textile industry. Exports are shrinking and price realisations are falling."

He added that the country's tea exports is loosing out to Sri Lanka, Vietnam and other new entrants in the global market.

Expressing concern over the law and order issues, he said every few days some incidents were taking place, which created fear in the minds of employees, and asked the Centre and state governments to take every step to bring peace in the region.
