Internet search giant Google has been ranked by the Fortune magazine as the best company to work for in America with amenities like free gourmet food, free laundry facilities and onsite doctor.

The search company, debuted at No. 1 in its first appearance in the list, leaving behind the biotech company Genetech, which topped the list last year, according to the rankings released by Fortune Magazine on Monday.

Google took the top spot largely due to amenities offered to employees like free gourmet food, the 'college-like' atmosphere, free laundry facilities, onsite doctor, child care, and the bring-your-dog-to-work policy, among a host of other perks

Yahoo, Google's chief rival in Internet search, was ranked 44th on the magazine's 10th annual list of the '100 Best Companies to Work For'.

The list was compiled for the magazine by Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz of the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco, using survey responses from more than 105,000 employees from 446 companies.

The survey was based on an evaluation of the policies and culture of each company, and the opinions of the company's employees.

Two-third of the total score came from the employee responses and the remaining one-third was achieved from the evaluation of the company.

Google, Genentech and Network Appliance were the only Silicon Valley firms to make to the Top 10, while Cisco Systems just missed at No 11. Other companies from the valley to make the Top 100 were Adobe Systems (31), Intuit (33) and Yahoo (44).
