Auto maker Ford India on Tuesday announced the commencement of production of diesel engines at its plant at Maramalai Nagar, Chennai, for use in midsize cars Fiesta and Fusion.
The $26-million assembly plant has a production capacity of 50,000 diesel engines and 10,000 petrol engines annually, the company said.
The new engine assembly plant created an additional 200 technical and engineering positions, increasing overall employment at Ford India to 2,300.
The company has also added 25 new local suppliers to its supply network to support the new diesel engine assembly operations, which help to contribute nearly 50 per cent local content to the diesel engines.
"This world-class facility will help position Ford India as a strategic manufacturing hub for low displacement powertrain engines within our Asia Pacific and Africa region," Ford India President and Managing Director Michael Boneham said.
Established in 1995, Ford India is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company. Other models of the company in the country are 'Ikon' and 'Endeavour'.
