Fake SpiceJet web page, one held

July 28, 2006 18:31 IST

Web designer Anvit Solomon Hembrom was arrested in New Delhi by sleuths from the cyber crime cell of Kolkata police on charge of cheating, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detective Department) Gyanwant Singh said in Kolkata on Friday.

The arrest was made on July 23 on the basis of a complaint by Spicejet Security Manager Pratim Majumder on July 19, he said.

The airline was flooded with complaints from several cities that people had either booked tickets or applied for jobs on the website and lost their money, Majumdar said.

The case was handed over to the cyber crime cell, which logged on to the web page and found it to be a near replica of the official SpiceJet website. It offered booking facilities and sought online applications for vacancies at the airline's 'call centre'.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Hembrom in New Delhi and brought him to Kolkata.

He was produced before a city court that remanded him to police custody till July 31, Singh said.

Hembrom allegedly collected about Rs 600,000 through the fake website, Singh said.
