The market leader in dry cell battery, Eveready Industries India, has tied up with a Hong Kong-based company to launch the most advanced form of rechargeable battery to brace itself for growing demand in the country and to take on cheap imports from China.

The city-based company on Monday announced the launch of Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), the most advanced form of rechargeable battery, which is claimed to be three times more powerful than the normal rechargeable nickel cadmium (NiCD) batteries.

Announcing the launch, Eveready's rechargeable business senior executive Zaurav Z Medhi said it was aimed at capturing the rapidly growing rechargeable battery market in the country following the growing usage of electronics gadgets.

He said to test the initial market response, Eveready has tied up with a company from South-East Asia to import the battery as well as the recharger and would later decide about setting up its own manufacturing unit.

He refrained from naming the company but it was learnt that it has tied up with the Hong Kong-based GPI International.

Medhi said that Eveready currently controls 40-45 per cent of the 7 million unit rechargeable battery market and it was confident of further increasing its share with the launch of the new product.
