The e-filing of income tax returns have registered a 48 per cent rise with more than one crore assesses doing it in the first four months of the current fiscal year 2013.

"The e-returns filed during the current financial year upto July 31, 2013 (1,03,21,775) represent an increase of 48 per cent over the number of e-returns filed during the corresponding period of the last financial year (69,63,056)," the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement on Monday.

The CBDT had extended the last date for filing of I-T returns for assessment year 2013-14, both manual and e-filed, because of pressure on the computer servers.

The maximum number of online returns, during the same period, were filed by salaried class of taxpayers. A total of 57,81,252 people under the salaried class filed their e-returns till July 31.

It was earlier erroneously reported that the total number e-returns filed by taxpayers till July 31 was less than the over 2 crore e-filing numbers filed during the financial year 2012-13.

"In this connection it is clarified that the figure of 2,14,86,807 e-returns filed during the financial year 2012-13 pertain to the whole year (i.e. between April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013), whereas during the current year up to July 31, 2013 (between April 1, 2013 to July 31, 2013) 1,03,21,775 returns have been e-filed.

"Therefore, it is clarified that the e-filed returns during the current financial year up to 31 July 2013 have registered substantial increase compared to the e-returns filed during the corresponding period of the previous financial year and are not less compared to the returns filed during the financial year 2012-13 as reported," the statement said.

The department's web based servers, according to official data, received a peak rate of 2,303 returns per minute during the current filing spree which ends on August 5.

A special team of the department is continuously monitoring the web portals and information technology parameters of the official e-filing website of the I-T department-- https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.

Electronic filing has been made mandatory for assesses having net taxable above Rs 500,000 from this year.
