After a long gap of more than 55 months, the Sahagunj factory of Dunlop India Limited in West Bengal re-opened on Friday for maintenance work to pave the way for operations to begin from August this year.

A Dunlop spokesman told PTI that the gates were opened at 6 a.m. this morning with 50 workers joining duty.

He said by September, another 1179 workers would join duty. Company chairman P K Ruia was not present at the time of re-opening of the plant.

The company's Ambattur unit in Tamil Nadu re-opened on April 10. Earlier, the company management had reached an agreement with the two unions of the company's Sahagunj factory.

As per the agreement, out of 2700 workers of the unit, 1500 would be given VRS, while the remaining workers would be absorbed into the rolls.

He said the maintenance work of the plant would taken almost four months and it is expected that the commercial production would start by August 31.

The plant at the peak of its capacity would produce 130 tonne per day with the product mix of LCV/HCV tyres as well as tyres for the off-the-road vehicles, he said.

The company is also negotiating with a European tyre major to produce aero tyres so that the plant's capacity would be fully utilised.
