Dish TV aims to add 3 lack HD subscribers

Buoyed by introduction of the new high definition technology, DTH service provider Dish TV said on Thursday it aims to add more than 3 lack HD customers next fiscal, almost 60 per cent of the expected subscriber addition in the space.

"Out of the total addition of 5 lack HD customers in DTH sector next fiscal, we expect to have major share of it at 3-3.5 lack HD customers with the launch of 30 channels on HD platform," COO Salil Kapoor told reporters in Chandigarh.

Dish TV, which is part of media conglomerate ZEE Group, also expects to break-even this year and see an increase in its average revenue per unit on the back of launching HD technology in DTH space.

"We are expecting to have positive cash flow in third quarter of 2011-12," he said.

Dish TV is planning to add 3.5 million customers next year, out of which 10 per cent will account for HD customers, he said, adding Dish TV has a subscriber base of 9.8 million at present.

DTH industry is expected to add 14 million new subscribers next fiscal of which 5 lack will be HD customers.

He said the company is confident that rising sales of HD televisions in the country will provide a boost to HD demand in DTH segment. Currently, 4 million people in the country have HD TVs, he said.

Dish TV claimed to have become the only DTH Company in the country to offer 30 channels on HD platform in 16 genres.

"We expect this (30 HD channels) to translate into significant gains in terms of market share, Arpu as well as total revenue for the company," said Kapoor. Currently, Arpu of Dish TV stands at Rs. 149.

The ICC World Cup cricket is also turning out to be money spinner for the company as it has witnessed 20 per cent jump in customer base in last 3-4 days.

It is offering World Cup viewing at HD platform.

Dish TV, which has been in the DTH space for the last seven years, is offering HD channels at a price of Rs. 2,390, including one month's subscription.
