Coal shortage: Power company CEOs meet PlanComm

PowerTop power company heads, including Anil Ambani and Cyrus Mistry, met Planning Commission member B K Chaturvedi on Wednesday, and are believed to have discussed the issue of coal shortage, which is hampering the growth of the sector.

The CEOs, sources said, also discussed the steps to raise domestic production of coal.

Besides, Mistry (Tata Group), Ambani, (Reliance), the meeting was also attended by L Madhusudan Rao (Lanco), Ashok Hinduja (Hinduja Group) and Shashi Ruia (Essar).

They are scheduled to meet Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas S Jaipal Reddy, prior to their meeting with the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his

residence in the evening.

Acute fuel shortages, pricing issues related to imported coal for power projects, delay in environment and forest clearances, funding problems and worsening health of power distribution companies (discoms) would be part of the agenda for the meeting with the Prime Minister.

Besides the Prime Minister, others expected to be present at the meeting include Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Jaipal Reddy, Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal, Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jayanthi Natarajan, Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Pulok Chatterjee and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
