The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, the Mumbai-based independent think-tank, will enter into an agreement with the state government of Karnataka to formalise a collaborative effort to monitor the state's economy.

Karnataka would be the 8th state to sign such an agreement. "Under these agreements, CMIE sets up a local monitoring team in the state and produces a monthly review of the respective state under its regional monitoring service," Mahesh Vyas, managing director and chief executive officer of CMIE, said.

The first monthly review was released by the chief minister of the Karnataka, S M Krishna in Bangalore on January 20, 2003.

CMIE has already launched a regional monitoring service in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Punjab. It has also signed an agreement with West Bengal.

These services are used by marketing companies, financial institutions, banks, international donor agencies, independent researchers and the state administration itself.

CMIE has increased the pace of releases of new services since it launched the industry analysis service last year.

The success of the industry analysis service spurred the launch of Business Beacon and Mergers & Acquisition.

Two new services are expected to be released in February - Alpha, a service on the Mutual Funds industry, and Indian Harvest, a database on agriculture.

Alpha is slated to be the first of a slew of new products on the financial markets.
