An amateur scientist from Madurai (Tamil Nadu) claims to have invented a device that can be used by two-wheeler owners to charge their cell phones while on the move.
A N Manoharan, an ex-navy man, recently told mediapersons about his invention at a 'Made in Madurai' exhibition.
He claimed that the device, which he has already begun manufacturing by training members of a self-help group in Sedapatti, would cost Rs60 apiece.
The device could be plugged to a dynamo or alternator, he said.
The time taken to charge a cell phone would not be different from that in the case of an electric point.
Manoharan, who was in charge of repairing communication equipment in the Indian Navy, said he has applied for a patent and is awaiting product certification from a private engineering college in Chennai.
So far, only certain models of cars have a facility to charge cell phones.
