CAS: Khurana likely to meet Vajpayee on Saturday

July 11, 2003 17:56 IST

The Bharatiya Janata Party's Delhi president Madan Lal Khurana, who has been opposing the implementation of conditional access system in New Delhi in the present form, is expected to meet Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Saturday to discuss the controversial issue.

Khurana has sought time with Vajpayee to convey his views on the issue, the party sources said in New Delhi on Friday.

The city BJP leader, who is wary of a backlash in the coming Assembly elections because of CAS, is expected to point out that any additional financial burden on consumers would distance voters from the party, they said.

Khurana has been seeking the postponement of CAS implementation till the "misgivings" regarding it were cleared and the consumers were convinced that it was beneficial for them.

"In principle, I am not against CAS. But people have expressed apprehensions over it and the government must clear the misunderstandings and confusions before implementing it," he said.

He has already held meetings with Information and Broadcasting Minister Ravi Shanker Prasad and BJP chief M Venkaiah Naidu to convey his opposition.
