Over seven lakh vehicles have been recalled by various manufacturers in India, after auto body SIAM started voluntary vehicle recalls for safety related issues in India in July 2012.
Several Indian carmakers have even failed the global crash tests and continue to manufacture cars without adhering to the safety norms to bring down costs.
Volkswagen has now hit the headlines with after US regulators found the auto giant rigging emission software to falsify tests.
Over the years, several auto makers have come in the line of fire after being exposed for faulty parts or defective software in India and abroad.

Honda
Honda Cars India is recalling around 2.24 lakh units of its premium sports utility vehicles -- CR-V, sedans Civic, City and hatchback Jazz, manufactured between 2003 and 2012 -- to replace faulty airbag inflators in the largest such exercise in the country.
Under the recall, which is a part of its parent Honda's global initiative to replace the faulty airbags, HCIL will voluntarily replace airbag inflators of 2,23,578 vehicles of previous generations of CR-V, Civic, City and Jazz.
In May, Honda Cars India had recalled a total of 11,381 units of Accord, CR-V and Civic, manufactured between 2003 and 2007, to replace a faulty part in the passenger and driver side airbags.
Nissan
Japanese auto major Nissan has recalled around 12,000 units of various models, including mid-sized sedan Sunny and small car Micra, manufactured between June 2013 and March 2015 in India as part of its global campaign to rectify engine switch and airbags.
The company has announced recall for around 270,000 cars worldwide on certain models.
General Motors
General Motors Co will recall 155,000 vehicles in India, its largest such exercise to date in the country, in order to fix wiring problems linked to a remote keyless entry accessory.
The recall, also one of India's biggest, follows a move in 2013 to recall 114,000 Tavera sports utility vehicles.
That recall aimed to address issues relating to emission standards and other regulatory specifications.
GM India would recall Chevrolet Spark and Beat hatchbacks and Enjoy multi-purpose vehicles manufactured between 2007 and 2014 that are fitted with the accessory, a gadget which allows owners to open their cars without a mechanical key.
Renault
French auto major Renault is recalling 646 units of hatchback Pulse and mid-sized sedan Scala in India, manufactured between September 2011-July 2012, to fix faulty driver side air bags.
"Renault is conducting a voluntary check on certain potentially affected Renault vehicles, 620 Pulse and 26 Scala, produced between September 2011-July 2012 which may have a possibility of driver air bag problem that was reported to Renault by airbag supplier, Takata," a company spokesperson said.

Toyota
In a major recall, Toyota recalled 1.37 million vehicles in the US due to defective airbags.
Toyota said it would recall 2.86 million cars, including 24 models manufactured between April 2003 and December 2008.
Honda
Defective airbags led to Honda recalling around 4.89 million vehicles.
Honda’s recall of 1.72 million vehicles will be from Japan manufactured from 2002 to 2008.
Nissan & Mitsubushi
Nissan recalled 198,000 cars, which includes Navara, Caravan and Teana manufactured between April 2007 and December 2008, due to defective airbags.
Mitsubishi said it would recall 120,000 vehicles.

Six carmakers from China recalled 3,00,000 cars due to a fuel pump defect
It includes Chongqing Changan Automobile Co Ltd, Beiqi Foton Motor Co Ltd and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd.
