And these days, irrespective of the segment, car makers are either tweaking their existing engines or developing new powertrains to attain maximum mileage numbers and attract more buyers.

Although, the real world fuel efficiency figures come rarely close to the claimed ones.

However, it still provides you a fair idea about the real world mileage figures.

Maruti Dzire Diesel

The new wholesome upgrade of Maruti Dzire comes powered by the new and lighter HEARTEC platform.

Here the 1.3 L Multijet diesel engine generates a maximum power of 74 bhp and a peak torque of 190 Nm, while the lightweight platform helps it deliver a whopping certified mileage of 28.4 kmpl.

With this, Maruti Dzire emerges as the most fuel efficient diesel car in the country.

The under 4-meter sedan comes with a choice of 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT.

The compact sedan stretches 3995 mm in length, 1735 mm in width and 1515 mm in height.

Maruti Ciaz Diesel SHVS

Maruti Suzuki has got a winner at hand in the mid-size segment in the form of Maruti Ciaz sedan.

The feature-rich plush sedan takes the #2 position with a claimed mileage of 28.09 kmpl.

Edging over the arch rival Honda City (25.6 kmpl) by a good margin in terms of fuel efficiency, Ciaz SHVS is packed with 1.3 L DDiS mild hybrid tech engine that develops max power of 89 bhp and peak torque of 200 Nm.

Fitted with 5-speed manual transmission, Ciaz stretches 4490 mm (length), 1730 mm (width) and 1485 mm (height).

New Toyota Prius Hybrid

Once rated as the most efficient sedan by the Japanese car maker, the New Toyota Prius with its innovative hybrid engine gives out a fantastic mileage of 26.27 kmpl.

Though steeply priced at nearly INR 40 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) mark, it is the most expensive sedan making to the list.

Toyota Prius with its 1.8 L petrol and 53 kW electric motor delivers a combined power output of 122 PS along with a peak torque of 142 Nm (petrol) and 163 Nm (electric).

Equipped with a smooth CVT transmission gearbox, the hybrid car stretches a good 4540 mm in length, 1760 mm in width and 1490 mm in height.

Ford Aspire Diesel

Figo siblings have been the sole bread winners in the mass segment for the American car manufacturer in India.

The Ford Figo hatch and Ford Aspire sedan share numerous identical features and are rated as the best in class in their individual segments.

The diesel choice powered by Ford’s trusted 1.5 L TDCi engine outpours a good 99 bhp and 215 Nm alongside lends an amazing mileage of 25.83 kmpl.

Ford Aspire (3995 mm (L) x 1695 mm (W) x 1525 mm (H)) and Ford Figo (3886 mm (L) x 1695 mm (W) x 1525 mm (H)), both are mated to a similar 5-speed manual transmission gearbox.

Honda Amaze Diesel

Honda Amaze created a flurry in the compact sedan segment when it was launched with excellent mileage figures of 25.8 kmpl.

Prior to getting dethroned by Maruti Dzire it munched a good number of sales for Honda in India and ruled the sub 4-meter segment.

Still selling well in the competitive environment, Amaze is powered by a refined 1.5 L i-DTEC diesel engine and is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, which gives out 99 bhp and 200 Nm.

The most efficient mule from the trustworthy Honda stable shares a length of 3990 mm, a width of 1680 mm and a height of 1505 mm.

Honda City Diesel

One of the mileage champions in the mid-size sedan segment, the diesel variant of Honda City delivers a pleasant mileage of 25.6 kmpl.

Once at the top-spot in the mid-size segment it lost its crown to rival Maruti Ciaz. Mated to a smooth 6-speed manual transmission gearbox, the finely tuned 1.5 L i-DTEC diesel engine produces 99 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque.

Honda City measures 4440 mm (length), 1695 mm (width) and 1495 mm (height).

Hyundai Xcent Diesel

Though Hyundai Xcent diesel secures the last spot in the list of 7 best mileage sedan cars, however, the mileage figures are not that bad either with 25.4 kmpl.

The traditional rival to Maruti Dzire quantifies to 3995 mm x 1660 mm x 1520 mm in length, width and height correspondingly.

Hyundai Xcent is endowed with 1.2 L CRDi diesel engine that produces 73 bhp of power and 190 Nm of torque.

The visually appealing update of Xcent and its sensible price label makes it an excellent value proposition in the compact sedan segment.
