APC launches single rack data centre tool

October 23, 2003 15:30 IST

American Power Conversion India has launched a single rack built in infrastructure system to replace the existing legacy systems in data centres.

Most data centres today use a number of vendors to supply different physical components of the data centre like racks, power, UPS, batteries and air conditioning.

What APC has done is create a single rack, which comes with built in power systems, temperature control, UPS and battery backup slots.

"We are bringing the module approach to data centers, which today have investments far greater than their utilisation. With APC's new product CIOs can now make investments in data centres only to the extent that they need," said Balu Pandian, marketing manager, Asia Pacific for APC.

Today data centres invest in network critical physical infrastructure based on anticipated demand. Which means that if a company anticipates usage of fifteen servers in three years, it will accordingly invest in a data centre with immediate effect, though it may need to run only two servers currently.

In practical terms, it means that the company will invest in power, air conditioning, UPS, batteries all geared to handle fifteen servers when it is running only two.

But APC's single rack solution allows IT managers to select a variety of standardised components to create a customised solution.

IT managers can buy a rack from APC that will be needed for just two servers and later on add more racks as and when needed. Every rack comes with slots for batteries, a built in UPS system, an optimal cooling system and slots for servers.

As the need to upgrade the infrastructure comes up, additional racks can be added on which gives IT managers flexibility in investments and maintenance of the systems.

The patent pending innovation from APC is called InfraStruXure.

Its features include a pay as you grow option so that companies can optimise capital expenditure rather than invest in a data centre based on anticipated demand.

The Microsoft Technology Centre in Bangalore is among APC's first few clients in India for the product.

In India, APC is best known for its off the shelf UPS systems that now are manufactured locally.

But the new product, InfraStruXure, will be imported in its entirety. APC India will, however, provide the requisite support and training for customers.
