February 20, 2006 16:20 IST

Engineering firm Voltas is planning to bid for the air-conditioning, security systems and other electro-mechanical projects of the Mumbai and Delhi airports. The company plans to present separate bids to GMR-Fraport (Delhi) and GVK-South Africa (Mumbai) consortiums.

The Union government has recently selected the two consortiums for the development of both the airports as part of its privatisation initiative.

"Voltas has an experience of working with GMR for the development of the Hyderabad airport. We would like to emulate the work for the Mumbai and New Delhi airports as well," said MM Miyajiwala, executive vice-president, finance, Voltas.

The company expects to manage works such as air-conditioning, baggage handling, public announcement systems, air-strip lighting, HVAC, electrical, plumbing and drainage systems, building automation system, fire fighting system, fire detection and suppression system, visual docking guidance system and access control systems.

Voltas has already executed such projects for Al Ain (UAE), Bahrain and Hong Kong airports.

Recently, the company was awarded a sub-contract for the mechanical and electrical works of the Hyderabad International Airport - passenger terminal building works by China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong), its main contractor.
