Dewang Mehta passed away in a hotel room in Sydney, Australia on April 12, 2001. One of the strongest pillars of the Indian IT industry, Mehta was the President of National Association of Software and Service Companies.

Associated with the organisation for over ten years, Mehta worked hard and lobbied ceaselessly in India and abroad to fulfill his dream: seeing India become the software superpower of the world.

Mehta's death comes at a juncture when the Indian software industry is facing a crisis for the first time. The industry is experiencing a slowdown and technology stocks are being battered on both US and Indian stock markets. The morale in the IT industry is at an all-time low.

The Indian IT industry never needed Dewang Mehta more than it did now. But for a man who toiled to bring the Indian IT industry to its present form and slept for not more than four hours a day, it is a rest well-deserved. His death however has left the industry orphaned.

He was a tireless worker and a wonderful person.

Dewang Mehta, rest in peace.
