Anti-monopoly watchdog MRTPC on Thursday ordered an inquiry into the 'sudden' hike in air fares and withdrawal of promotional fares by airlines in 'unison'.

Taking a suo motu action, the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission directed its investigation wing to probe the 'sudden' increase in air fares by airlines in unison, sources in the commission said.

The Directorate General of Investigation and Registration, investigation wing, has been directed to submit its inquiry report within 60 days.

The inquest has been ordered under two sections of the MRTPC Act, which relates to reduction in competition and simultaneous increase in prices.

The sources said the decision of the airlines would narrow down choice and availability for the consumers and reduce competition in the aviation sector.

The report of this probe is likely to be submitted soon, the sources added.
