As uncertainty looms large over the fate of Tata Motors' [Get Quote] Nano factory at Singur, grapevine has it that the Tatas are gearing up to roll out about 1,000 Nano cars from their plant in Pune.

The company, sources said, in the last stages of preparation for this.

"Rolling out the Nano before the Durga Puja has become a prestige issue for Tata Motors. To start with, the project got delayed because of torrential rains last year and now political imbroglio has put the entire project under jeopardy. The company can't help but think of implementing Plan B," a source closely associated with the Singur factory said on Friday.

Pooh-poohing the rumours that inflation and inordinate delay may goad the company to hike the price of the Rs 1-lakh people's car, he said: "There is no such decision. In fact, the company is going out of its way to keep the price at Rs 1 lakh."

"The company still hasn't fully lost hope on the Singur factory and feels the impasse could be resolved in a fortnight or so," he added.

When asked about the Nano rolling out from the Pune factory this October, an official spokesperson for Tata Motors said, "The company dissociates itself from any speculative comments at the moment."

Meanwhile, a committee constituted under the aegis of West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi may seek more time to submit its final report on land to be provided to the agitating farmers.

After a three-hour meeting, Rabindranath Bhattacharjee, Trinamool Congress MLA and chairman of the committee, said that the committee could submit an interim report and then seek more time for its final report.

The report was to be submitted within seven days of the agreement forged between the West Bengal government and the agitating farmers side represented by the Trinamool Congress.
