Sensex ends up 460 points; Jaiprakash, TCS soar

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 205 points at 10,428. Nervousness in early trades saw the index pare gains and touch a low of 10,250.

However, renewed buying interest in the market helped the index bounce back to higher levels. The Sensex rallied to a high of 10,750, and finally ended with a gain of 460 points at 10,683.

The NSE Nifty ended at 3235, up 112 points.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 1,613 stocks advanced, 975 declined and the rest were unchanged.

INDEX MOVERS...

Jaiprakash Associates [Get Quote] zoomed over 16% to Rs 79. TCS [Get Quote] soared almost 13% to Rs 561.

Reliance Communications [Get Quote] surged over 11% to Rs 258. Tata Steel [Get Quote] and Satyam [Get Quote] rallied around 10% each to Rs 278 and Rs 317, respectively.

Tata Power [Get Quote] gained 9.6% at Rs 790. Sterlite moved up 8.5% to Rs 295.

ACC added 7.5% to Rs 494. Larsen & Toubro advanced over 6% to Rs 861.

Reliance and Wipro [Get Quote] moved up 5.7% each to Rs 1,397 and Rs 296, respectively.

HDFC [Get Quote], Hindustan Unilever, DLF, Reliance Infrastructure and ICICI Bank [Get Quote] were up around 5% each at Rs 1,977, Rs 252, Rs 286, Rs 506 and Rs 431, respectively.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Mahindra & Mahindra slipped over 2% to Rs 409. Hindalco [Get Quote] shed 1.7% at Rs 64.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 301.65 crore followed by Reliance Capital [Get Quote] (Rs 225.50 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 172.25 crore), SBI [Get Quote] (Rs 162.60 crore) and HDIL (Rs 159.65 crore).

GVK Power led the volume chart with trades of around 1.68 crore shares followed by HDIL (1.10 crore), Reliance Petroleum [Get Quote] (92.90 lakh), IB Securities (87.85 lakh) and Reliance Natural Resources [Get Quote] (87.65 lakh).
