Rail passengers booking an e-ticket can now carry any one proof of identification and not necessarily the particular one which they had specified at the time of buying the ticket.

In an effort to popularise e-ticketing among passengers, the Railways has decided to dispense with the existing provision of specifying the type of proof of identification to be carried at the time of booking.

The modification was circulated through an order dated October 8.

A passenger can now use voter identity card, passport, PAN card, a driving licence or photo identity cards issued by the central or state governments to get the e-ticket and then can carry any one of them during the journey.

Till now, passengers had to carry the same identity card which they used for booking their tickets. In case the passenger forgets to carry that proof, he/ she is considered travelling without ticket and penalised accordingly, even if he/ she has some other valid proof to establish the identity.

'Since the condition of indicating proof of identity has been dispensed with, the concept of master passenger will no longer be there. In fact, during the journey, even if any one passenger booked on an e-ticket presents any of the five identity cards, the same may be accepted as proof of identity,' the letter said.
