Now your tax cases to be solved sooner

January 31, 2008 16:20 IST

With tax related cases mounting in various courts, government on Thursday appointed two senior counsel as Additional Solicitors General exclusively to deal with direct and indirect tax cases in Supreme Court and high courts across the country.

M Chandrashekharan, who had earlier served as ASG, will be the new ASG for dealing with indirect tax cases while Parag Tripathi will deal with direct tax cases, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said at a press conference in New Delhi.

He, however, made it clear that the government would continue to use the services of Attorney General and Solicitor General as also the present Additional Solicitor General. "We will continue to use the services of G E Vahanvati and Gopal Subramaniam," he said.

Observing that tax cases no longer remained a small matter, he said it had become 'imperative' to appoint someone familiar with the tax cases in High Courts and in the Supreme Court to take 'complete control' of the situation.
