The story of two bulls

February 4, 2008

Taken in by the Wall Street Bull, the Bombay Stock Exchange authorities met Bhagwan Rampure, a sculptor from Pune (now based in Solapur), to create a bull as the symbol of the stock exchange.

Speaking to a Mumbai newspaper, Rampure recently said: "I got a call from the advertising department of the BSE last year telling me that they wanted to create a big model of a bull. They gave me pictures of the Wall Street Bull. They allowed me to incorporate some changes, but added that they didn't want any major differences."

The artiste then went about taking photographs of bulls and studying their anatomy before beginning work on the actual model. "I first showed them a draft clay model, which they approved," Rampure told the newspaper.

Rampure began work on the actual sculpture in October 2007. The making of the sculpture was divided into four parts because of its size. The bull is five-foot tall and eight-foot long and weighs over a tonne. Rampure's son, Sagar, assisted him in creating the model.
