Consumers may be reeling under an inflation of close to 13 per cent, but it should not be a cause for concern for India's second richest person Anil Ambani, whose pay package has grown by close to six times over past fiscal.

From about Rs 2.4 crore (Rs 24 million) in the year ended March 2007, Ambani's full-year pay surged to Rs 13.4 crore (Rs 134 million) in the latest fiscal from the four listed group companies.

Moreover, the latest year figure does not include his take from Reliance Communications [Get Quote], the flagship entity that accounts for over half of the group's total valuation.

In comparison, his elder brother Mukesh Ambani -- possibly the highest-paid business chief in India with an annual package of over Rs 44 crore (Rs 440 million) -- got a hike of just about 45 per cent over the past fiscal.

Among the three listed group companies -- Reliance Industries [Get Quote], Reliance Petroleum [Get Quote] and Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Ltd [Get Quote] -- Mukesh gets a remuneration only from the flagship entity RIL.

According to RIL's annual report, Mukesh Ambani got a total payout of Rs 44.02 crore (Rs 440.2 million) in 2007-08, up from Rs 30.46 crore (Rs 304.6 million) in 2006-07 and Rs 24.77 crore (Rs 247.7 million) in the year before that.

In comparison, Anil Ambani got total remuneration of about Rs 13.4 crore (Rs 134 million) in 2007-08 from his four group companies -- Reliance Capital [Get Quote], Reliance Infrastructure (formerly Reliance Energy [Get Quote]), Reliance Power and Reliance Natural Resources Ltd [Get Quote] (RNRL). The figures for RCom are not yet available.

This still marks a multi-fold surge from a full-year payout of about Rs 2.43 crore (Rs 24.3 million) in the previous year 2006-07 from four listed group companies in that year -- namely Reliance Capital, Reliance Energy, RNRL and RCom.

A pay package of Rs 13.4 crore gives Anil Ambani an average payout of over Rs 4 per second for 2007-08, against less than Re 1 per second in the previous year.

However, the per-second payout for Mukesh Ambani works out to be close to Rs 14 -- that too just from one company. There are close to 3.15 crore seconds in a year.

In 2006-07, Mukesh earned more than 12 times of Anil, but in 2007-08 it is just about three times. Besides, it could further narrow after including the figures for RCom, whose latest fiscal annual report is yet to be made available.

Interestingly, before parting ways, both the brothers had an equal remuneration of close to Rs 21 crore (Rs 210 million) at RIL.

For both the brothers, a major part of the total annual remuneration comes in the form of commissions, which companies pay to their select executives as ratio of their net profits.

As RIL's chairman and managing director, Mukesh got a salary of Rs 60 lakh (Rs 6 million) per month and another Rs 48 lakh (Rs 4.8 million) in the name of 'perquisites and allowances' during 2007-08. Besides, he got Rs 18.75 lakh (Rs 1.875 million) as 'retiral benefits' and close to Rs 42.75 crore (Rs 4.275 million) as commission on net profit.

Similarly, Anil got a commission of Rs 11 crore (Rs 110 million) and sitting fees of Rs 60,000 at Reliance Capital, but his salary was nil at the company, according to its annual report.

At Reliance Infra, he got a salary of Rs 10.95 lakh (Rs 1.0965 million) , sitting fees of Rs 2.6 lakh (Rs 260,000) and commission of about Rs 2.22 crore (Rs 22.2 million), making a total of close to Rs 2.36 crore (Rs 23.6 million).

Anil received only sitting fees from Reliance Power and RNRL -- of Rs 20,000 and Rs 2,40,000, respectively -- in the latest fiscal, according to their annual reports.

Anil Ambani is the chairman of all the listed companies of Reliance ADAG -- namely RCom, Reliance Capital, Reliance Infrastructure, RNRL and Reliance Power.
