In one of the biggest such programmes, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta is investing Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) over three years in remodelling its campus to make room for 25 per cent more students and give it an international look.

Its campus can now accommodate 650 students interspersed over three full-time post-graduate and executive programmes.

"We will invest Rs 50 crore in the first phase. For the next phase, we will look at raising funds with our internal resources as well as some corporate and alumni funding," said Dinesh Varma, chief administrative officer of IIMC.

The institute has roped in Pune-based Christopher Charles Benninger Architects to handle the project. The first phase of construction is expected to be complete by May next year.

In the first phase, the institute will get a classroom complex consisting of 14 rooms and six syndicate rooms. A 150-room hostel will also be built of which 25 rooms will be for married students.

At present, the hostel can accommodate 650 students. After the extension, it will be able to house 150 more.

There will also be 14 more classrooms, up from four now. The remodelled campus will have an executive guest house for its management development programmes and other short-term programmes for executives. The executive guest house will have 10 suites and 75 rooms. At present, executives attending management development programmes and short-term courses put up at IIMC's Tata Hall, which can accommodate up to 60. After the extension, IIMC will be able to house 150 more executives.

The Kendriya Vidyalaya located on the campus will be relocated to one end of the campus. A new 5-acre construction is underway to house the Vidyalaya while its existing building will be used by IIMC. The roads and ambience will also be remodelled to give it an international look. In the next phase, the existing buildings will be remodelled into new structures and sprout a parking lot, a shopping centre and an entertainment zone.

The campus will also have more offices and residences for faculty.
