Maruti Suzuki is heading for an image makeover through its new sedan SX4, which is expected to hit the Indian roads by mid-May with a price range between Rs 700,000 and Rs 800,000.

While unveiling the hatchback version of the vehicle for European market at the Auto Show in Geneva, Suzuki Motor Corp Board Member and Senior Operating Officer Toshihiro Suzuki said the sedan version of the car would be launched in India soon.

The SX4 sedan will be priced around Rs 700,000 to Rs 800,000 in India as Maruti Udyog Limited is making an all-out effort to prove itself in the bigger segments too, after the success it has achieved with small and compact cars.

Although Suzuki has introduced the 1.6 litre diesel SX4 hatchback for the European market, the sources said MUL will restrict itself only to the 1.6 litre petrol sedan for the Indian market.

The SX4 is also being viewed as an attempt by Suzuki to prove itself globally as a complete car maker rather than being a mere compact car manufacturer.

In India, SX4 will replace MUL's previous sedan Baleno, which has been phased out, and will be produced at its new unit at Manesar in Haryana.

The SX4 will be competing with the likes of Mitsubishi Lancer, Chevrolet Optra, Honda City and Ford Fiesta in the fast-growing A3 segment which accounts for about 15 per cent of the automobile market in India.
