Matrix, ONGC, Ranbaxy top wealth creators

Pharmaceutical major Matrix Laboratories, public sector oil producer Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and Ranbaxy Laboratories have emerged as the fastest, biggest and the most consistent wealth creators for year 2006, according to the 11th Wealth Creation Study by Motilal Oswal Securities Ltd.

Ranbaxy has emerged as the most consistent wealth creator, followed by Wipro, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Cipla and HDFC. Out of the 10 most consistent performers between 1991 and 2006, four are pharmaceutical and six are consumer companies.

The latest Wealth Creation study identified the top-100 wealth creators that have added at least Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) to their market capitalisation between 2000 and 2006, after adjusting for dilution.

Matrix Laboratories became the fastest enhancer of capital, posting a market capitalisation CAGR of 183 per cent. It was followed by Kirloskar Brothers (170 per cent), Pantaloon Retail (169.9 per cent), Aban Offshore (169 per cent) and Natl Minerals (154.6 per cent).

Most companies among the fastest wealth creators had less than Rs 1000 crore (Rs 10 billion)-market capitalisation in 2000.

ONGC became the biggest wealth creator by doing a business worth Rs 167800 crore (RS 1678 billion). Reliance Industries and IndianOil followed at Rs 1,07800 crore (RS 1078 billion) and Rs 55500 crore (RS 555 billion).

The other two in the top five biggest wealth creators were Infosys Technology and ITC.
